The early history of Cloverdale is clouded by rival names for credit, although the year 1839 is generally accepted for the founding. Land for the town was entered at the U.S. Land Office as early as 1823. Apparently a trail came south from the National Road and there was a store in 1836 and a post office called Clover Dale (the spelling until 1855). Moses Nelson kept the store and a tavern, and is generally acknowledged as founder, but credit is also given to Andrew T. McCoy, who laid out lots on the west side of town in the 1830's
